A FEW WORDS about US

Dr. James J. TenBrook received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He then proceeded to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree. Afterwards, Dr. TenBrook trained at Emory University where he performed his internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Finally, he went on to Harvard University, where he earned his Masters of Medical Sciences and Orthodontic Degree from the Harvard Medical School and Forsyth Dental Center respectively. Dr. TenBrook returned to his grassroots in Southern New Jersey, realizing his dream of bringing high quality orthodontic treatment at a reasonable cost. Dr. TenBrook currently owns and operates five offices in Southern New Jersey as well as TenBrook Orthodontics Practice Management Services, which focuses on high efficiency treatment in a private orthodontic practice setting. TenBrook Orthodontics is recognized as one of the finest practices in the United States. Dr. TenBrook is active in many areas of his orthodontic profession. He has been a guest speaker, both nationally and internationally, from Palm Springs, California to Pretoria, South Africa, where he lectured on treatment efficiencies and practice management solutions. Dr. TenBrook is an active member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, and the Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics.

WHAT is ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontics (from Greek orthos "straight or proper"; and odons "tooth") is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as "dentofacial orthopedics". Orthodontic treatment can be carried out for purely aesthetic reasons with regards to improving the general appearance of patients' teeth. However, there are orthodontists who work on reconstructing the entire face rather than focusing exclusively on teeth. Treatment is also often prescribed for practical reasons such as providing the patient with a functionally improved bite (occlusion).DEFINITIONOrthodontics is defined by the American Association of Orthodontics as, "the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The practice of orthodontics requires professional skill in the design, application and control of corrective appliances to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and to achieve facial balance."HISTORYIrregular teeth have been a major problem for some individuals since antiquity and attempts to correct them go back to at least 1000 B.C. Orthodontic appliances have been found from Greek and Etruscan materials.Edward Angle was the first orthodontistthe first dentist to limit his practice to orthodontics only. He is considered the "Father of Modern Orthodontics."METHODSFor comprehensive orthodontic treatment, most commonly, metal wires (archwires) are inserted into orthodontic brackets (dental braces), which can be made from stainless steel or a more aesthetic ceramic material. The wires interact with the brackets to move teeth into the desired positions. At TenBrook Orthodontics, the use of the T1 TenBrook Self-Ligating System has revolutionalized the use of brackets and reduced the patient's time in braces.Additional componentsincluding removable appliances ("plates"), headgear, expansion appliances, and many other devicesmay also be used to move teeth and jaw bones. Functional appliances, for example, are used in growing patients (age 5 to 14) with the aim of modifying the jaw dimensions and relationship if these are altered. This therapy, termed Dentofacial Orthopedics, is frequently followed by fixed multibracket therapy ("full braces") to align the teeth and refine the occlusion.After a course of active orthodontic treatment, patients will typically wear retainers, which maintain the teeth in their improved positions while surrounding bone reforms around them. The retainers are generally worn full-time for a short period, perhaps 6 months to a year, and then part-time (typically nightly during sleep) for as long as the orthodontist recommends. It is possible for the teeth to stay aligned without regular retainer wear. However, there are many reasons teeth will crowd as a person ages, whether or not the individual ever experienced orthodontic treatment; thus there is no guarantee that teeth will stay aligned without retention. For this reason, many orthodontists prescribe part-time retainer wear for many years after orthodontic treatment.DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLANNINGIn diagnosis and treatment planning, the orthodontist must (1) recognize the various characteristics of a malocclusion or dentofacial deformity; (2) define the nature of the problem, including the etiology if possible;(3) design a treatment strategy based on the specific needs and desires of the individual; and (4) present the treatment strategy to the patient in such a way that the patient fully understands the ramifications of his/her decision.TRAININGOrthodontics was the first recognized specialty field within dentistry. Many countries have their own systems for training and registering orthodontic specialists.
