Ceramic, Clear or Metal: Which Braces are Right for You?

Ceramic, Clear or Metal: Which Braces are Right for You?

Times have changed and getting a great smile isn't like it used to be. Nowadays, people who decide to straighten their teeth have more options than ever before.

At TenBrook Orthodontics, we recognize all of our patients are unique, and that's why we offer a variety of orthodontic solutions to fit your lifestyle – from bright colors to clear; invisible to Invisalign. You'll be surprised at how many options are available!

Often it isn't easy to pick which treatment option is best for your needs. Let's review each of them to see which would best fit your lifestyle or your child's.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are generally opaque in color and consist of crystals that can be fragile. They come in mono-crystalline and polycrystalline forms.

The advantages of ceramic braces are they match tooth color for aesthetics. However, their disadvantages include being larger, bulkier, and causing more friction. These drawbacks will slow down tooth movement, resulting in longer treatment times.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are more aesthetic than metal braces (discussed below). However, they can be stained from various foods and drinks. They also have a certain amount of flexibility that can compromise ideal tooth positions.

It's important to note that not all clear braces are created equal. They can be made from many different materials depending on the manufacturer. For example, some clear braces are made of ceramic or porcelain, while others are made of a material similar to plastic. It is important that you find an orthodontist who uses high-quality clear braces, which will be more resistant to staining and breakage.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most common type of braces. They can be formed into smaller brackets and are strong and reliable. Their disadvantages include being more noticeable on the teeth, which may not be ideal for self-conscious patients. However, metal braces outperform all other materials when it comes to speed, precision, and reliability. This is why metal braces are so popular.

TenBrook T1 Braces

The Latest Technology for Metal Braces

The field of orthodontics is constantly evolving, giving you many options to get your perfect smile faster! Most people are quite familiar with traditional braces that include "tie wings." However, these "older" braces are quickly becoming obsolete, since they typically require longer treatment times and greater forces on the teeth, which can be painful.

Newer treatment technologies, like self-ligating braces, allow the orthodontist to move teeth with lower forces, which is healthier and allows for faster tooth movement. Self-ligation technology is becoming the wave of the future for orthodontics.

Even though traditional metal braces are still very popular, aesthetic braces are catching on and are more popular with adults who want a less visible option. Self-ligating braces, like our T1 Braces and T-Clear Minis, often cut treatment times in half, allowing the orthodontist to create a beautiful smile in much less time.

Invisalign®

Invisalign is an excellent product for people who do not want braces. These clear plastic aligners are changed weekly to guide your teeth into their new positions. Invisalign takes longer than our T1 Braces, but it is more discreet and works nicely for simple tooth alignment issues.

Many other orthodontists offer Invisalign, but the product is only as good as the hands that guide it. Our orthodontists and staff are highly-trained Invisalign providers and can ensure your mouth is getting the exact care it needs throughout the entire process.

Tips on Choosing the Right Braces

To help you choose the right braces for your needs, here are some important things to look for:

1. Gentleness

Make sure your orthodontist uses self-ligating braces like our T1 Braces, since they require less friction and reduced forces on your teeth, resulting in healthier tooth movement and minimal discomfort.

2. Made in the USA

Did you know that over 90% of braces are made overseas, mainly in China, from inferior quality materials? At TenBrook, we only use high-quality, nickel-titanium archwires made in the USA. Our technology will move your teeth without the pain and discomfort associated with inferior wires and braces.

3. Hygienic

Ideally, the braces that go into your mouth should be smooth and rounded for greater comfort and hygiene. Our small, rounded brackets are easier to clean and ideal for showing less food, plaque, and "white spots" often associated with regular rectangular braces.

4. American or Harvard Board Certified

Since an orthodontist makes a significant difference in how well your new smile will turn out, make sure you choose one who is American or Harvard Board Certified. You only get one shot at your perfect smile. Let's do it right!

5. Certified Orthodontic Assistants

Certified orthodontic Assistants are the people who do a lot of the work on your braces and teeth. Make sure they are CDA or RDA, which shows they have extra training and proficiency for working in your mouth and can provide the best care for you and your children.

6. Caring and Friendly Staff

Make sure your orthodontic team is caring and has your best interest at heart. TenBrook has a highly trained staff who genuinely cares about making your orthodontic experience the best it can be!
